Coates Physiotherapy was founded in 2003 by Richard and Vanessa Coates, with the dedicated aim of providing highly experienced and bespoke physiotherapy services to Chepstow, Newport and the surrounding area of South Wales, Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire.

Vanessa Coates

BSC (HONS) MCSP, HPC (REG), ACPOHE​

Since qualifying from the Welsh College of Medicine in 2002, Vanessa has progressed quickly to become a highly respected Physiotherapist. She has worked in the NHS as a Senior Physiotherapist working in Chepstow Community Hospital and Gwent Healthcare and has also worked in elite sport with Newport R.F.C. and U.W.I.C. Vanessa is a member of The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists working in Occupational Health and Ergonomics (ACPOHE). Vanessa has ongoing work within corporate giant ExxonMobil (Solutia) conducting in‐house occupational health lectures, return‐to‐work and onsite assessments.

Richard Coates

MSc, BSc (Hons), MCSP, HPC (reg), ACPSM

Since qualifying in 2000 Richard has worked in elite sport (cycling and rugby), the NHS as a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist, and in private practice. For the last 15 years, Richard has had a special interest in shoulder injuries and their rehabilitation and has lectured on BSc and MSc physiotherapy courses at Cardiff University. He has been awarded the British Elbow and Shoulder Society Travelling Fellowship and is currently researching the decision making surrounding an athlete’s return to sport following shoulder injury.

Members of our team have worked in elite athletics and cycling, West End shows, and professional rugby. We use this vast experience to rehabilitate and implement the staged return of our patients back to the field of play as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Richard has a special interest in complex shoulder cases. He was awarded the British Elbow and Shoulder Society Travelling Fellowship where he looked into the return to sport protocols following shoulder surgery and is currently researching decision making surrounding an athletes’s return to sport following shoulder surgery.
We have a long history of treating complex cases which many people experience in older age. Patients who may have neurological or respiratory conditions alongside an orthopaedic problem, regularly attend our clinic. We like a challenge and aim to treat patients holistically.
Our team has a wealth of experience in dealing with musculoskeletal disorders. We are happy to offer a second opinion if your current treatment program has not progressed as you would have liked, and we will offer onward referral to other healthcare professionals where we think it is necessary.

Post-operative rehabilitation is a regular part of our practice. We have a good relationship with local consultants and pride ourselves in facilitating our patient’s return to full function.
We have excellent relationships with local surgical and medical consultants. This means that should you need an onward referral for further investigations and/ or treatments we will facilitate this to aid your return to full fitness.
